Beginner Band
 

The students learn the fundamentals of music theory while developing proficiency with a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. This course is offered to students in grades six through eight. Students perform at a number of concerts throughout the year including a Winter Holiday Concert and a Spring Concert.
 
Prerequisite:  No previous experience required.
 


Intermediate Band

Through exposure to a variety of music literature, students in grades seven and eight continue their instrumental education by expanding their mastery of music fundamentals, achieving technical skills, and acquiring of performance and rehearsal skills. In addition to daily in-class rehearsals, students are introduced to musical experiences such as All-State, various honor bands, Solo & Ensemble and adjudicated performance assessments. Students are placed in an ensemble based on their experience and ability level.
 
Prerequisite: 
One year of previous band experience.


Advanced Band

Students in these courses broaden their musical experiences through multiple ensemble opportunities and advanced musical instruction. In addition to school band activities, students are presented with a wide array of musical opportunities such as Solo & Ensemble, All-State and various local and university honor bands. Students are placed in an ensemble based on their experience and ability level. They are required to participate in both Marching Band (fall) and Concert Band (spring).
 
Prerequisite: 
One year of previous band experience.


Jazz Band
 

This course is offered to students in grades 7-12 as a supplemental ensemble. Students learn the elements of jazz theory and improvisation. Participation in these ensembles requires an audition.
 
Prerequisite: 
One year of previous band experience and participation in a concert band class.


Marching Percussion Ensemble
 

This course is a complementary ensemble to participation in the “Big Blue” Marching Band (Fall Semester Only). Concepts and literature covered reinforce the skill sets of both the marching battery and outdoor front ensemble.

Prerequisite:  One year of previous band experience and participation in a concert band class.


Spring Percussion Ensemble
 

This course is a general percussion ensemble course covering concert, keyboard, hand drum, and world percussion. This is a performing ensemble so its members are expected to participate in various festival and community events.
 
Prerequisite: 
One year of previous band experience and participation in a concert band class.


General Music Courses for Vocal and Instrumental Music Majors


Music Theory/History
 
This course explores the how’s and why’s of music mechanics. Students gain a deeper understanding of chord structure, voicing, and historical perspective.
 
Prerequisite: 
Current enrollment in a vocal or instrumental ensemble.


Music Technology
 
This course introduces students to ongoing technological developments and demonstrates how technology can challenge, enhance, and transform preconceived notions of how music is made, taught and learned.
 
Prerequisite: 
Current enrollment in a vocal or instrumental ensemble.
